Every vehicle registered in Virginia needs a valid safety inspection sticker, and it has to be renewed every 12 months. Here's what the inspection involves, what it costs, why cars fail, and how to walk out with a passing sticker the first time.
What it costs and how long it lasts
The Virginia State Police set the maximum fee: $20 for most passenger vehicles and $12 for motorcycles. A new sticker lasts through the end of the month shown, 12 months out. The sticker shows the month and year, so you can check yours through the windshield in a couple of seconds.
Don't confuse this with the emissions test. Safety is yearly and statewide. Emissions runs every two years, and only in Northern Virginia localities like Arlington. Not sure which you need? Our free Virginia inspection and emissions checker takes about 20 seconds.
What the inspection checks
A certified inspector follows the State Police manual, and the whole inspection is about whether the car is safe to drive. The official process covers 24 steps, including:
- Brakes, including the parking brake, pads, lines and hoses
- Steering and suspension, such as ball joints, tie rods and play in the wheel
- Tires, wheels and rims
- All exterior lights, including the rear license plate light and signals
- Windshield, glass, wipers and mirrors
- Exhaust system, horn and under-hood items
- Seats, seat belts and the airbag system
- Doors, fuel system and floor pan
The most common reasons cars fail
- Worn brakes. Pads below 2/32 of an inch are rejected. Catch these early with a free brake inspection.
- Tires. Tread below 2/32 of an inch, a repair in the sidewall, or exposed cord.
- Lights. A single burned-out bulb can fail you, and it's a cheap fix.
- Steering and suspension play. Loose tie rods or ball joints. See suspension and steering.
- Wipers and windshield. Torn blades, or a chip or crack over the size limit above the three-inch line.
- Unapproved stickers and tint. Especially on cars that came from another state.

What if it fails?
You get a rejection sticker that's valid for 15 days beyond the inspection. Reinspection at the same station costs $1 during that window and usually only rechecks the failed items. A rejection sticker doesn't excuse a defect, so fix anything unsafe before you drive on it.
Passing the first time
Take five minutes before you come in. Have someone watch the lights while you work them, run the wipers, honk the horn, look at the tread and clear off any expired stickers. If you already suspect a problem, like a brake squeal or a wiper that streaks, fix it first or choose a shop that can do both at once.
